Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church is the faith center of the many Catholics who settled in this part of Texas. The first evidence of the existence of the Catholic Church in the Ganado area dates back to 1870 when a visiting priest from Victoria, Texas, offered Mass for the local Catholic community.
In 1893 Catholic services were held in the Mitchell Hotel in Ganado. Then in 1914 a small frame church was built under the direction of an assistant pastor in El Campo and two years later the church received a pastor of its own. Since then the parish has continued to grow and now includes some 450 households. |
